Anyone know...

of a good girl recording artist?

I would like to pick up some music by a woman. I would prefer that the sound was more tame than balls to the wall.

I enjoy Michelle Branch for her voice not necessarily for her sound. I want to hear something that is almost relaxing.

John Peddie or Troy Myers are the ones I expect to chime in first, but I want everyone's opinion.

Thanks!

Carrie Newcomer leaps immediately to mind, especially if you're looking for something relaxing. If one must label artists by genre, then she would go in the folk category, but her music covers a wider spectrum than comes to mind when you say folk. Doubt you'll find her in stores out there, but her stuff is on iTunes. Her most recent record, The Geography Of Light, is very good.

Others: Shawn Colvin (mostly for her only real hit record, A Few Small Repairs), Joan Baez (start with her 1960s work and stop once you get to "Diamonds And Rust" and whatever you do, do NOT listen to the Judas Priest version of the song), Dolores O' Riordan (see also The Cranberries), and if you want to jazz it up a bit, try Diana Krall.

Oh, and one other, though this is a duet record. I know it's going to sound odd, but Alison Krauss and Robert Plant are astonishing together on Raising Sand.

taylor swift writes pretty catchy songs that are the female, wal-mart, pop-country equivalent of saved by the bell episodes.

also there is the bubbly song girl, colby calais or something...all her songs could be described as breezy. sara barelies is like her, but with a piano.

all these will give you softer, but still ultra catchy songs.

and there's also that one bitch, what's her name...oh yeah, jason mraz is a pretty okay female recording artist.

Good post. I was thinking about making a similar one. (Did we talk about this on the phone?) I have virtually no chick CDs.

I really like Paula Cole. I like how she uses her voice. She sang (sings?) backup for Peter Gabriel for a few tours. She can scream and break up her voice very well, do the folksy warbly thing but she also can do the pure thing too. I find her range of both vocal talent and musical stylings impressive. That doesn't happen much.

I only have her first two. "Harbinger" is a little raw and honest-feeling. "This Fire" is her second and grooves more. They're both pop cheese, but it's pretty good pop cheese.

She whines a lot about being an oppressed semi-(wanna-be?) lesbo but her talent lets me overlook that.

Damn, I forgot all about Paula Cole. This Fire absolutely does kick ass - try to forget the fact that it contains the way overplayed "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" and the Dawson's Creek theme that no one ever ever needs to hear again. Some of the songs fit your relaxing theme, but the best ones - "Throwing Stones" and "Nietzsche's Eyes" - most certainly do not. What Michael said about Harbinger is exactly right.

Who knew he and I would ever agree on...anything?
